Veneta maybe? Again, I have my biases, but I wouldn't touch anything from after 1974 for the first year of my deadheadedness. Veneta is a solid, classic show (although I think it's trumped by the September shows) and has a huge number of peaks, as well as some great renditions of the "cowboy tunes." 1972 seems to me to be a really good entry point; they were extremely tight at that point and had a pretty reasonably sized repertoire, and it also exemplifies a peak point in the psychedelia aspect to the music (playin and dark star from this show are many people's favorites).

The more I listen to Veneta, the more I notice how totally out of tune it sounds on most songs.

I'd take 12/5/71 over that any day.

Also a big problem on the "Ladies & Gentlemen" discs (Fillmore April 1971) - great energy, lots of strings need tuning. No wonder in latter years they spent more time between songs retuning. But, it features one of my favorite GDRFB.

Good idea, but I don't have that one myself, cuz I haven't found it in downloadable form ... Am I missing a link here?

But yes, '72 is a good idea. Tight, with both cowboy tunes and Dark Stars, etc. Guess there's a reason Europe '72 was one of the first albums I listened to constantly. (Back when I first heard the music, I loved the first album, Anthem, Aoxomoxoa and Europe '72. Honestly, I don't think the others would have "converted" me. But I also saw a series of shows almost immediately, so it's hard to know what it would mean just to have heard the recorded music.)

Perhaps try a september 72 dick's pick? 11, 23, 36?

I know this is really stupid, but I've never actually tried burning DPs onto CD. I have some on CD and some on iTunes, and I've thought of putting my iTunes ones onto CDs, but haven't figured it out yet. (OK, I haven't tried, but it's not instantaneously apparent in a nanosecond, even though there's probably a button for it or something.) This reminds me that I actually should save the iTunes ones in case my computer goes kablooey. Although they're probably safe in iTunes Universe somewhere.

Create a playlist for what you want to burn. Drag and drop the show, album, or individual tracks into the playlist. At the bottom of the playlist there will be a button to burn a CD. iTunes will check the playlist automatically to see what can fit on a single disc. If you don't like where a disc is going to end (such as in the middle of a China/Rider) you can un-check the last song or songs to make a nice, tidy disc. Once your disc is burned, un-check those songs and repeat the process for the next disc.

Veneta has everything, great show. Here's a good place to download, clean and easy:

Well, that was fun. Thanks!

And get this: the "genre" listed for One More Saturday Night is "Christian Rap."
